It's probably a 10-15 minute steep hike from the visitors center where the bus lets you off to the vantage point.

This is the rainy season station you take to Aguas Calientes to get to Machu Picchu

I still got pretty sunburned. Not sure if it was the altitude or the panorama windown on the train.

The train stopped in Aguas Calientes. A bus was then provided up the hill (with our tour) but it was still quite a hike to this point. We were at 7,900 ft in altitude so it was easier to breath than in Cusco which is at 11,000 ft
