The Huntington Botanical

An amazing collection of Art, Rare Books and a huge botanical garden on the former estate of Henry Huntington, a railroad baron. I did a google map check and I was raused 2.8 miles from this spot, but never visited it till now :D. A great day trip from LA with lots of walking!

Caution Be sure to get yout tickets ahead of time from the website at https://www.huntington.org/, You need a reservation to purchase a ticket. On the plus side it makes for a relaxed, uncrowded visit!

11 Henry E. Huntington
Notes Born in 1850 in Oneonta, NY. in1872 he went to work for his uncle, Collis P. Huntington, one of the owners on the Central Pacific Railroad. This work led him west to California. In 1903, he purchased the San Marino Ranch, and began transforming into what is now the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. In 1913, He married Arabella Duval Huntington, the widow of Collis. She was Henry's age and shared his interest in collecting. As one of the most important art collectors of her generation, she was highly influential in the development of the Huntingtons European art collection. Henry E. Huntington died in 1927: Arabella pre deceased him by 3 years. Both are buried in the mausoleum on the property.

Picture This famous portrait was done by Thomas Gainsbourough in1770. This is it's home, but it just got back that day from a loan to the National Gallery in London. Be sure to see "Pinkie"
